Aikido can be a powerful aid in the formation of character, self-discipline and self-confidence for children. Students gain basic physical conditioning and coordination, and respect for others.

Q: Are there competitions in Aikido?
A: No. In Aikido the students cooperate with a partner to learn and practice techniques. Practice emphasizes coordination, conditioning, and discipline, with an emphasis on practicing cooperatively and safely.

Q: Are there ranks and colored belts in Aikido?
A:
Yes. Students attending the children’s class are awarded ranks and colored belts.

Q: How do students get ranks?
A:
Students earn ranks by testing. We have tests three or four times a year. In addition to performing techniques, the student’s attitude, attendance at classes, and conduct are also important considerations in awarding ranks.

Q: When can my child start?
A:
Students can enroll anytime. Classes are ongoing, so you don’t have to wait until the beginning of the month to enroll your child.

Q: What are the qualifications of the instructors?
A:
All of the instructors of the children’s class are experienced at teaching Aikido to children. The instructors are black belts and teachers certified by Birankai International.

Q: Does my child need a uniform?
A:
Yes. All students wear a uniform, called a “gi.” You can buy a uniform at Aikido Institute of New Mexico. Please call for prices.
